05:30 - wake up. Enough said. Great rehearsal the evening before and we are all excited and super charged for the day ahead.
06:00 - mini bus. Trust us to get a driver that is a comedian - and a shite one at that. (only in London) The bloke chatted no stop cracking the worse jokes in the world but hey he got us the the airport early with no delay so happy days!!!
07:00 - Check in Heathrow. Jack gets stopped and mistaken for a walking corpse!! Apparently you can't take the living dead on board - hahaha. Nadia has too many liquids and Ian sneaks through undetected. Jase however has a snare drum as hand luggage and is checked for explosives. (we think he liked the rubber gloves!!)
08:10 - Boarding. After drinking shit loads of water and coffee we're ready to board. Jack takes a 10 point lead for starters and Jase score 3. Ah the games the youth play. We're all aboard and hook up with Dermot from Eufest. Great to catch up.
09:30 - Airplane food. BA, we've got to give you an 8 out of 10 for food and drink not bad at all!!!!
10:00 - Kick back and relax.
11:35 - Touch down in Zagreb. The weather looks awesome - from the rain to the sun is amazing!!!!!!!! Few mins to kill then go unload the gear ready for the next leg of the journey.
12:00 - mini bus waiting and a group of people film and take pictures at the air port arrivals. Nice. 10 people for 30 kuna to do the job don't tell the guys. Hahhaah jokes.
12:11 - journey - REM on the radio. And some guy talking Croatian - figure that. What a beautiful country!!!!
12:44 - Arrive at the festival. Boom - the weather is beautiful so hot in comparison to London. Just sorting out the guess pass and artist back stage passes.
13:45 - interviewed for RTL on campsite was great fun!!! Can you please speak more slowly and do you speak English Jase. Hahahahah
14:15 - chill time. Waiting now for an hour before we head to the stage and do sound check. Adrenaline starting to seep in. Nadia and Ian have gone back to get changed. The vibe here is truly awesome, INmusic has that awesome festival vibe. The sun is shining people smiling and the good times are rolling.
16:00 - Sound Check time. BOOOM happy days!!! Everything sounding huge through the P.A. 'World' was the check song to make sure all the vocals were spot on. Jack's sound was awesome with the dives and stops sounding wicked. Everyone is just buzzing, but chilled. Somehow we all just feel at home up here and the mood is relaxed but focussed and the sound is ferocious!!!! The stage team are awesome. Helpful is an understatement and to watch them go about their business is like watching a small army at work. Everything runs like clockwork and the team work is amazing.
16:45 - FOOD TIME. Chicken and chips. Lovely!!!
17:45 - The walk up to the stage has us ready - it's business time!!! We all smile, hug and walk on to the main stage. As the first notes ring out we see a surge of people make their way to the front of the stage - this is going to be special and we all can feel it. We soak up the experience and as I look forward seeing my band mates doing their thing. I get a feeling of that we are in our rightful place. We have worked so hard for this and if it's a pub gig to 10 people or a festival to thousands we give it 110% no matter what; we love what we do and have the belief that we have created something special. World sounded tight the middle 8 part hearing Ian's and Jack's effects over Nadia's tight bass and drums sounded amazingly erie and beautiful. Cut it Up was the bomb, as Ian warmed the crowd by getting them to sing back the chorus at the start. Then we went into the track. By the time we hit the 1st chorus the crowd had the hang of it and where chanting back 'yeah you cut it up'. Truly a magical moment for all of us. 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' was awesome when we went into our trade mark pause the bass and drum thumped out and the crowd were wondering what had happened as we all went into freeze mode. As this proceeded the crowd cheered more until only Ian was in freeze mode and on cue he went nuts - and the crowd loved it!!!!
The end of 'Forever Young' was savage!!!
As the tempo gained so did the crazy crew at the front barriers slamming into each other and really rocking out. The guitars played their final chord and were left feeding back as Ian laid his guitar on the drums and Jase throw his sticks at the kit and walked to the wings. Ian then grabbed another stick and launched it into the crowd - they went mad for it!!!
18:15 - High as a kite on adrenaline. We get our gear quickly off stage as Frank Turner's crew step into action for the change over. The feeling is electric, time to reflect and sit back with a drink and some food.
19:00 - Chatting to Franz Ferdinand's guitar tech and some of the road crew. Watching Frank from back stage was awesome. To watch a gig from the musicians point of view is a great experience for any musician or fan. Picked up some great tips from watching Frank work the crowd.
20:00 - We go front stage to wait and watch Paulo Nuntini. We get some really cool people rushing up to us wanting to take pics with us and fans telling us how much they loved the set and how they discovered our sound. Truly touching meeting people who really love what we do. As we walk around there's such a cool vibe here everyone is happy in festival mode. A Brazilian guy rushed up to us and said our sound set up his festival!!!! We give him a CD and a card. In fact we hand out a lot CDs for people and cards. Jase and Nadia were walking past when they get pap'd 'hey you guys are in Katalina Kicks - rock n roll!!!!' Snap snap snap.
20:45 - Paulo time. Enough said. Great sound, soul and heart; defintely the best band of the festival.
21:45 - Backstage we're hanging out chatting and end up talking to Paulo's driver. Such a cool guy he dropped us a text in the morning saying I checked you guys out and really loved your music, wasn't expecting that!!! The atmosphere in the back stage area is so cool everyone relaxing and chilling. We see the Franz Ferdinand boys come in with Sparks.
22:30 - we meet up with people we met and made friends with on the camp site. Walking back to the main stage people start pointing at us and saying its Katalina Kicks. A feeling of gratitude that we could make such a positive impact on people is truly the best reward for me of giving something back what music gave me. We make more new friends and have a nice little circle as we wait to watch Franz Ferdinand and Sparks.
23:45 - We lose Jack and Ian in the crowd. Nadia and I chat and get to talk to people from all over Europe. Truly what an awesome experience.
00:30 Franz finish with 'Take me Out'. The crowd wake up and go nuts. I think the mix with Sparks didn't get the kids rocking out, but that track hits the note and sends everyone mental. Walking back with Nadia I hear the sound of drum n bass and a London accent. I'm stopped in my tracks as its Katy Tempest live. I managed to catch 3 songs the tent is packed out and the atmosphere is awesome. European kids really seem to love the accent and think it's so cool. The kids also seem more open regards music they can be rocking out to metal and the next thing dancing to hip hop and drum and bass. Man I love this festival.
01:30 I see a little light coming out of Ian and Jack's tent. I pop my head in too see both of them giggling like two school girls. Where did you go lads??? I asked. They look at me and just start laughing again. I see the amount of empty plastic beer cups out side the tent, enough said. They deserve to celebrate it has been a fantastic day for all of us. As the music pumps from across the bridge I look up to the sky give thanks and know this is the start of something very special........
